If you’re wondering how to clean your diamond jewellery properly, the good news is that it’s simple to do at home — if you know the right method. As a Hatton Garden jeweller, I’ll show you exactly how to keep your ring looking its best.
The Myth of Cleaning Diamonds with Alcohol
If you were to ask your mum how to clean a diamond ring or a pair of earrings, chances are she might suggest soaking it in vodka or gin for a few hours. It sounds convincing enough — after all, alcohol cleans things… doesn’t it?
I remember seeing this growing up, and never questioning it. It wasn’t until I began my journey in the jewellery industry at sixteen that I realised this was simply a waste of perfectly good vodka. When I mentioned it to colleagues in the workshop, it raised a few laughs. Yes, alcohol can act as a disinfectant, and it’s used in certain cleaning solutions — but placing your jewellery in a glass of spirits won’t properly clean it. It simply isn’t effective at removing the build-up that dulls a diamond’s brilliance.
How Professionals Clean Diamond Jewellery
In a professional jewellery workshop, we use ultrasonic cleaning machines combined with ammonia-based solutions. These are heated to high temperatures and designed specifically to remove dirt, oils and residue from hard-to-reach areas.
This is what restores a diamond’s true sparkle — not a home remedy.
How to Safely Clean Your Diamond Ring at Home
The good news is that you can still achieve excellent results at home with a simple and safe method. Use warm water with a small amount of washing-up liquid. Hold your ring securely between your fingers and gently brush the underside of the setting using a soft toothbrush. This is where dirt tends to build up most. Once clean, dry the ring carefully with kitchen roll. Avoid using tissues, as fibres can get caught in the setting. One important point — never pour boiling water directly onto your diamond. Sudden temperature changes can cause damage.
What Causes Diamonds to Lose Their Sparkle?
The most common cause is something you wouldn’t expect — everyday handwashing.
Residue from soap, combined with natural oils from your skin, gradually builds up behind the diamond. Hand creams, lotions and even cooking ingredients can also contribute to this layer, dulling the stone over time.
A Simple Rule to Remember
So next time someone suggests cleaning your diamond jewellery with vodka or gin, you’re better off pouring yourself a drink — and sticking to warm water and a gentle clean instead.
