British Academy of Jewellery Partners with Renowned Jeweller Lewis Malka

The British Academy of Jewellery (BAJ) is thrilled to announce the latest innovative project in their ongoing partnership with celebrated engagement ring specialist Lewis Malka.

This unique initiative will see students from BAJ's HNC Art & Design 3D Design (Jewellery Design and Manufacturing) course designing and manufacturing bespoke engagement rings inspired by culture and getting feedback from Lewis Malka. The project, an integral part of BAJ's curriculum, provides students with hands-on experience in the jewellery industry while fostering creativity and innovation. With the support of Lewis Malka, renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship and contemporary designs, students will have the opportunity to showcase their talents and push the boundaries of traditional jewellery design.

The brief for the project is equally captivating: students are tasked with creating a one-of-a-kind engagement ring that celebrates a chosen culture. From exploring the rich tapestry of cultural betrothal customs and various cultures to delving into the history of engagement rings, students will embark on a journey of discovery, incorporating their findings into their designs.

Eleni Zolia, Course Leader HNC Art & Design 3D (Jewellery), said,

"We are delighted to partner with Lewis Malka for this exciting project. This collaboration not only provides our students with invaluable industry experience but also encourages them to explore the diverse cultural narratives surrounding engagement rings, paving the way for innovative and meaningful designs."

The project brief challenges students to think creatively and critically, considering various aspects such as the design, materials, techniques, and production methods. Each engagement ring design will feature a faceted stone and will be presented on a stand designed by the students themselves, effectively communicating the cultural inspiration behind their creations.

Lewis Malka said,

"This project offers a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the world of jewellery design. I'm excited to work alongside these talented individuals and witness their creativity unfold as they explore the intersection of culture, history, and craftsmanship."

The project's culmination will be an exhibition showcasing the students' bespoke engagement rings, along with their accompanying display stands and information guides. Lewis will select two designs, these two students will win a copy of his book: The Engagement Ring.
